Our first look at Shadow of War, the recently announced sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, has been released by WB Interactive and Monolith. More than 16 minutes of footage can be seen in the new video, which debuted on Wednesday, including some of the Nemesis system improvements we’ll see when Middle-earth: Shadow of War hits PS4, Xbox One and PC later this year. And that's just the start of what's changing this time around.

Monolith seems intent on improving just about every aspect of the Middle-earth experience -- not that we hated the first game in the series, quite the opposite, in fact -- from the series’ beloved Nemesis system to combat mechanics and camera work. We get an early look at Shadow of War's new follower mechanics, which give players far more incentive to recruit ranking members of Sauron's army, and Talion’s ability to deploy his warchiefs around the map as needed. Boss fights look to be much more memorable affairs in Shadow of War too, thanks to much more elaborate environments and scripted events tied to the Nemesis system. We also get sneak previews of the game’s improved loot mechanics and the massive battles in which Talion will participate.

For a closer look at Middle-earth: Shadow of War, take some time to watch the new gameplay walkthrough from WB Interactive Entertainment and Monolith Productions. Then head down to the comments section and let us know what sorts of changes you’re hoping to see when Shadow of War heads to PC and consoles later this year.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game debuts Aug. 22. 2017.

Shadow Of War Players Will Tell Better Stories Than The Game
And the next chapter of Talion and Celebrimbor’s story was pretty underwhelming. But the stories people tell about their Nemesis encounters, which are more chaotic than ever before, will undoubtedly shape public opinion more than any criticism Shadow of War garners along the way.
  • Nemesis system does an even better job of letting players witness and tell unique, action-driven stories
  • Most of the narrative content is just plain boring
