While there’s no word yet on when the second season will air, this is heartening news for fans of the anime who feared that they wouldn’t see the adaptation come to a proper end.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is based on an award-winning historical manga of the same name and centers around rakugo, or the Japanese art of comic storytelling. In our review , we strongly recommended Showa:
“While the art style and animation are neither flashy nor poor, the plot and characters and subject matter are all so compelling that this anime is like very few others. If you’re tired of yet another ecchi harem anime or more angsty magical teens at space boarding school, give Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju a watch for a total change of pace.”
The anime’s first plot centers around a man called Yotaro who’s released from prison on good behavior during the Showa Genroku era of the ‘60s to early ‘70s. Upon his return to society, he begs a master comic storyteller to take him on as an apprentice. The manga began in 2010 and the series is scheduled to end with its 10th volume, meaning that the second season of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju should air as the manga comes to a finale.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju has been festooned with awards, namely, the “Best General Manga” prize at the 38th Kodansha Manga Awards, the Excellence Award at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards and a nomination for the 17th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2013. An earlier two-episode OAV was bundled with volumes 7 and 8 last year.
