It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a decent skateboarding game in the same spirit as the legendary Tony Hawk Pro Skater titles. Weirdly enough, the closest I’ve found to experiencing high flying thrills and stunts similar to the series developed by the mythical Neversoft is Descenders, a downhill freeriding game for the PC and Xbox One.
That said, there is an actual skateboarding game right now on PC which has been out in Early Access since December of last year that sells itself as the next big thing when it comes to skateboarding. Skater XL, developed by Easy Day Studios, has been released for quite some time, but in a new announcement it seems that it will also be making its way to the Xbox One. This posting should fall on the radar of those who want a genuine couch skateboarding experience, as the developer stated that Skater XL will be making its way to the console in 2020.
“Since the launch of Early Access for PC we’ve been barraged daily with requests to bring the game to Xbox One,” Easy Day Studios director and co-founder Dain Hedgpeth said in an official press release. “Skateboarding is a natural console experience; something fun to play kicking back with friends in the living room. Too many years have passed since a great skateboarding game was released for the console audience, so we’re stoked to be bringing Skater XL to Xbox One players around the world.”
Players on Xbox One should, however, take note of the game’s current mixed reception on Steam Early Access. A lot of the reviews seem to note that the content being offered as of now does not justify the price, and that the lack of maps to play on is only being improved by a robust modding community. In any case, it will be interesting to see if Skater XL can break new ground in the coming month in the form of new, expansive content. It also remains to be seen if it will remain in Early Access by the time it releases on the Xbox One, or if the launch on the console will signify its official 1.0 release.
Skater XL is now available on PC via Steam Early Access.
