Now that Skyrim is definitely confirmed for the Nintendo Switch, fans have been wondering what version of the game will run on the handheld/console hybrid. According to a now-edited listing on the Canadian Best Buy site, it seems the Switch will be getting Skyrim: Special Edition.
As spotted by Gaming Target, the Canadian Best Buy site at one point listed a description of Skyrim for the Switch. This description confirmed the Switch will allow for mod support of Skyrim , even calling the support “PC-like.” The listing also confirms the visual upgrades made for the Special Edition, including volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, and screen-space reflections.
Seeing as how this post was edited and taken down, that leaves us with two conclusions. The good conclusion is Best Buy posted the page too early, and this is what players will actually get once Skyrim is launched. The bad conclusion is this was just a test page that featured slightly modified text from the PS4 and Xbox One Skyrim listings.
The fact that Best Buy bothered to modify the text at all makes me think the good conclusion is the one that will actually come true in this case. That’s really exciting, but also pretty much guarantees that Switch owners will need to buy external memory as soon as possible. With only 32GB of internal memory (and some of that taken up by the Switch already), there’s not much saving a player can do. Add in the fact that Skyrim is 18.1GB on PS4, and you’re looking at most of the internal storage taken up just by one game if you get Skyrim digitally. To download and save mods, you’ll need them stored elsewhere.
As of right now, no release date has been given for Skyrim on Switch. The leaked listing didn’t mention it either, so Best Buy didn’t mess up as badly as it could have. Expect this to release sometime in the fall of 2017, probably around October or November.
So what do you think? Are you excited to play modded Skyrim on the Switch? Do you think this leak was just an accident or hoax? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
