Dave Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time on Nov. 12. Even though it has been more than a decade since Chappelle Show, the comedian didn't miss a beat in his return to sketch comedy, even bringing back his iconic characters for a The Walking Dead skit. But in light of America's election day hangover, it was Chappelle's election party skit that offered a moment of self reflection for Americans caught off guard by Trump's victory.
While many at the party embraced a 'post racial' America that would never allow Trump to win the oval office, Chappelle's character took the stance of a realist:
"Guys, we're about to have our first woman president," said Celicy Strong's character. "This is going to be a historic night!"
"Yeah, it might be a historic night," Chappelle replied. "Just don't forget it's a big country."
Chappelle's words set the tone as the election party witnessed Trump win one state after the next. Just as anxiety reaches a feverish high among the people at the election party, Chris Rock casually strolls in the room to ask, "What'd I miss?"
A hysterical Aidy Bryant tells Chris Rock the awful news: "Trump might actually win!"
"Haha, I mean of course," said Rock. "What are you talking about?"
"I tried to tell them," Chappelle said to Rock.
Unlike the rest of the election partygoers, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were not surprised by Trump's overwhelming support.
"Oh my God, I think America is racist,” saids Cecily Strong.
Chappelle and Rock mockingly put their hands to their mouths in feigned surprise to Strongs realization.
"Oh my God," replied Chappelle. "You know I remember my great-grandfather told me something like that. He was, like, a slave or something."
Despite the grief that has overcome the party of Hillary supporters, Chappelle and Rock are hardly affected by the results, recognizing that despite all the apparent progress, America hasn't changed a great deal at all.
The skit ends with a one-liner from Beck Bennett that puts Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle in stitches: “This is the most shameful thing America has ever done."
