Sega just released the first trailers for Project Sonic and Sonic Mania at a party celebrating the blue hedgehog at Comic-Con. Both of these games seem to do away with the gimmicks that have been so popular with Sega, like weird laser whips or werewolves. For the first time in a long time, I am actually optimistic about getting some good Sonic The Hedgehog games.
Project Sonic will be released in 2017 on all major consoles, including the unreleased Nintendo NX. The trailer showed a world overrun with giant robots – I’m guessing Dr. Robotnik might have something to do with it. The game feels and looks a lot like Sonic Generations , the last decent game in the franchise before everything took a nosedive at Sonic ‘06. Sonic’s younger self is also fighting by his side in the game, which hopefully means the game will have some great looking 2D platforming.
Sonic Mania shows that Sega does actually listen to their fans. For the 25-year anniversary, Sega is releasing a brand new 16-bit sprite Sonic game exactly like the Sega Genesis games of the 90s in the Summer of 2017. Sega decided that they wanted to appease to nostalgic players, taking away some of the creepy aspects of Sonic (like the werewolves). There aren’t neck scarves here – just some more platforming like the stuff that made us love the blue hedgehog all those years ago.
Mighty No. 9 left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, leaving a void that can only be filled by an amazing platformer. If any game can do that, it’s Sonic Mania or Project Sonic.
