Sony is ready to show off its PlayStation VR at GDC 2016 . iDigitalTimes will be attending the press event, so be sure to check back at Tuesday, March 16, at 5 p.m. for the latest updates.
Unfortunately, Sony will not be livestreaming the PlayStation VR press event.
The most anticipated announcement for the PlayStation VR is the release date and price. We already know this information about its competitors, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The Oculus Rift will cost $599 compared to the Vive’s $799 price tag, so it’ll be interesting to see where the PlayStation VR lies. The Daily Mail reported earlier this March the PlayStation VR could be as high as $800, but Sony denied the claim.
As far as the release date is concerned, Sony also refuted claims they would not launch their headset until fall 2016. GameStop CEO Paul Raines sparked the conversation during an interview with Fox News in February. Raines said Gamestop was actively working on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive launches, and the PlayStation VR launch was planned for later in the year.
"We are right now preparing for the launches of the major VR products," Raines told Fox News . "We're in discussions with Oculus, HTC, and Sony. It's a big launch, we're getting ready for it. We will launch the Sony product this fall and we are in discussions with the other two players."
Sony was quick to deny claims of a fall 2016 release in a statement shortly after Raine’s interview. The company said Raines was speculating and the company did not have a launch date as of February.
