The reveal of SoulCalibur VI at the Game Awards was a huge surprise, and details of the upcoming fighting game from Bandai Namco are still being kept under wraps. Now a new interview with the developers of the title teases some returning features and the brand new Reversal Edge mechanic.
In the latest issue of Famitsu, translated by Siliconera, the developers spoke about the “Reversal Edge” mechanic, which can be performed with a single button input. This move will block all attacks, and we they say “all,” that includes high, middle low and even grabs as long as you hold it.
When players let go of the “Reversal Edge” button, the character will slash and “enter a scene.” This means the character will do a special attack that has an extended cutscene, like what was shown in the SoulCalibur VI reveal trailer.
The developers claim to have made the game more accessible by simplifying some of the more difficult mechanics of fighting in SoulCalibur to a single button press.
Some moves can only be pulled off by consuming Soul Charge and powering up, a mechanic in the past games.
Guard Impact no longer consumes your meter, and the “Lethal Hit” is a mechanic that will send the opponent flying when a character lands a certain move in the right condition.
As for the story of SoulCalibur VI, the developers explained since there weren’t any 3D models on current-gen consoles, the team needed to make a new SoulCalibur. This inspired setting VI in 1586, when the first SoulCalibur took place. The magazine states the keyword here is “reboot,” and that’s pretty much what this is.
Fans can think of SoulCalibur VI similarly to Mortal Kombat 9, which brought the story back to the original and changed it slightly.
The developers do tease that they are looking forward to collaborations, which could mean that guest characters may be on the way.
The devs also mentioned the appeal of a character creation system, , and said it “can’t be taken away, so keep an eye out for that.”
SoulCalibur VI will release for PS4, Xbox One and Steam in 2018.
