Tom Holland is doing infinite amounts of press for Spider-Man: Homecoming , but no interview has been as revealing as the one with ShortList. It’s no secret actors who play superheroes all have funny stories about working in a skintight, uber-expensive and uncomfortable costume, but Spidey’s experience just moved to the top of the list.
"All I have on under that costume is a thong," Holland confessed. "They brought them in on my first day, like, 'Here are your thongs.'"
While the 21-year-old actor didn’t say it specifically, it’s clear thongs as thin as Spidey’s webs are not his preferred undergarment.
"I had serious misgivings -- 'Would my arsehole ever be the same again?' -- but I had to get used to it, even though I was thinking, 'No way, no way!'"
Tom Holland has been extremely open about the behind-the-scenes experience making Spider-Man: Homecoming . So open, in fact, directors are not letting him read the Avengers: Infinity War script quite yet. And rightfully so, because Holland continues to go into deeper detail about how he uses the bathroom on set.
"You have to completely disrobe and then put a dressing gown on, but they’re very comfy ones, you can’t walk around in just a thong, can you imagine?" Holland continued. "And then you race across the lot to the toilet, then come back, get back into it -- it’s such a mission."
Throwing another wrench into this mission is the fact the Spider-Man suit doesn’t account for the fact humans drink water. According to Holland, the suit was not built to quench thirst. According to ShortList, a plan was made to “drill a hole in Spider-Man’s head and feed a plastic tube through his eye socket and into his mouth.” Holland added that his assistant, Harrison, was tasked with operating the contraption. However, he quickly realized staying hydrated brought him back to square one with the bathroom issues.
“It was a very grave situation,” Holland concluded, pointing out that “any discomfort is immediately outweighed by the privilege of wearing it.”
