Discover Weekly , one of the best Spotify playlists , has a new adversary: Fresh Finds . The weekly curated, 2-hour playlist features trending songs from emerging underground artists. Unlike Discover Weekly, which is personally curated to your music listening patterns, Fresh Finds crawls the web for almost-trending tunes and gives you them all, regardless of your specific taste.
Fresh Finds regenerates every Wednesday, unlike Discover Weekly’s Monday update. The playlist isn’t exactly new, but Spotify officially re-launched it today in finished form. Originally, Spotify described the playlist as “bound to break” songs across five genres. While that’s still correct, now Spotify sorts the Fresh Finds playlist into five separate categories instead of cramming all genres into one list.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Fresh Finds (brand new breakout tracks spread across five genres)
- Fire Emoji (hip-hop)
- Basement (electronic)
- Hiptronix (vocal pop)
- Six Strings (guitar driven)
- Cyclone (experimental)
Spotify’s playlists, such as Discover Weekly and Fresh Finds, aren’t mere recommendations. All paid streaming services offer curated playlists, but Spotify is the only company to make solid algorithmic suggestions and predictions based on on music you haven’t found yet. This is what’s keeping Spotify on top, above Apple Music and Tidal. Since Spotify doesn’t have Jay Z or Dr. Dre on their team, the execs seem to be taking the opposite approach, putting undiscovered artists in the spotlight instead of capitalizing on already-established mainstream artists.
Don’t forget to save your favorite Fresh Finds songs to your personal library before the playlist refreshes!
