Sci-fi fantasy inspired role-playing game Star Ocean: First Departure R will soon be launching for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch for the west and Japan on December 5, as announced by publisher Square Enix and developer tri-Ace.
Star Ocean was originally released in 1996 for the Super Famicom. It was later remade for the PlayStation Portable under the Star Ocean: First Departure name in 2008, which marked the first time it has received a western release. Now, the new and improved version comes in the form of the First Departure R label.
Star Ocean: First Departure R is set on the underdeveloped planet of Roak where Roddick, the protagonist and player character, resides. He lives within the peaceful and uneventful town of Kratus. As a member of the village’s local “Defence Force” tasked with protecting the town, Roddick learns of a mysterious disease that has plagued the neighboring town, turning those affected into stone. Roddick’s journey begins as he ventures out with his two friends, Millie and Dorne, to gather a cure for the sickness which can be found from an herb growing on Mt. Metorx. It is here that they encounter Ronyx and Ilia, who appear before them in a pillar of light.
Star Ocean: First Departure R is played from a top down perspective and players navigate and explore through towns and dungeons. Players will also be able to recruit up to eight characters that they can travel with, each with their own special skills and abilities.
One of the main changes added to the original game with the PSP remake is the inclusion of a world map and obvious graphic and visual updates. So, what’s in store for the First Departure R version? Up-conversion from SD to HD resolution, all new illustrations, options to change art styles between First Departure and First Departure R, a movement game speed boost feature, and tons more like new voice-over work and adjustments to battle difficulty.
Star Ocean: First Departure R will launch for the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch on December 5 for $20.99. Pre-orders are now available for western customers.
