While we don’t know any names or actors yet, Bryan Fuller and the other producers of the upcoming CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery streaming series have revealed some of the character types we should expect to see on the deck of the USS Discovery NCC-1031. The main character will be a lieutenant commander aboard the Discovery, with producers planning on casting a minority woman in the part (likely modeled on astronaut Mae Jemison). There will be an openly gay member of the crew. And there will be more aliens on the crew than in previous series.

Now we have an idea of the type of alien Fuller would love to feature on Star Trek: Discovery.

Fuller’s open enthusiasm for the Star Trek: The Animated Series Enterprise crewmember M’Ress suggest the inverse: that the Discovery crew won’t feature a Caitian. But if the feline Trek species wasn’t in Fuller’s alien glossary before, it most certainly is now.

Fuller’s tweet comes in reaction to some inspired fan-casting, bringing Anna Friel — who worked with Fuller on Pushing Daisies — into the United Federation of Planets. The character fans hope she will play, M’Ress, served aboard the Enterprise bridge in the final two years of the ship’s original five-year mission. But is an actual M’Ress role or cameo likely?

So far the only Original Series character Fuller has expressed interest in featuring on the new series is Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson (originally played by Jane Wyatt, but most recently by Winona Ryder). So while Enterprise crewmembers and other TOS and TAS cameos are possible, they’re not likely to factor into DSC until subsequent seasons.
