If you’re bummed that Star Wars Battlefront doesn’t have a single-player campaign, blame The Force Awakens. This news comes from Eurogamer, reporting on an EA investor call made last night.
EA’s boss, Patrick Soderlund, said during the call the decision to leave out a single-player mode was due to the latest Star Wars movie. "We made [the choice] due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact," Soderlund said on the call.
"I think the team created a really good game based on the premise that we had,” Soderlund continued. “I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a very different demographic than a traditional EA game. So from that perspective, it's a success.”
Many have criticized the lack of a single-player mode in Battlefront since before the game was even released. Included on the list of critics is John Boyega, one of the stars of The Force Awakens. He, and thousands of others online, wanted something more from Battlefront that a multiplayer-only game couldn’t bring.
EA recognized these criticisms during the call, addressing the middling reviews found on Metacritic. “ Are we happy with the 75 rating? No,” Soderlund said. “Is that something we're going to cure going forward? Absolutely."
And there is somewhere for Star Wars Battlefront to move forward, as EA has already announced plans for a Star Wars Battlefront 2 coming out in 2017. The sequel will focus on characters and stories from the new movies, and will have to deliver something more if it hopes to match the success of the first game’s 12 million+ copies sold.
