Now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available on Blu-Ray/DVD, are you considering buying a copy for yourself? You shouldn’t, because there’s a free version available that’s just as good. Disney’s official Twitter account posted a condensed emoji version of Episode VII, and it’s pretty fantastic.
The three minute long video is definitely condensed, but hits all the major plot points and remains entertaining thanks to its excellent animation and clever use of technology (a map to Luke found in an iPad’s privacy settings, smart!). Take a look at Star Wars: Episode VII - The Emoji Version below:
Pretty good, right? The likes of Rey, Finn, Han, Kylo Ren and more appear as icons that were used on Twitter during The Force Awakens’ marketing push last fall. The emoji film seamlessly transitions from iPhones to tablets and even features Rey rating Chewbacca’s Millennium Falcon piloting as if he were an Uber driver.
This isn’t the first time emojis have been used to recreate narrative stories. Disney has emoji-fied some of their animated classics such as Aladdin , Frozen and Tangled . It’s part of series called “As Told by Emojis.” Star Wars appears to be the first non-animated Disney film recreated, but I wouldn’t be surprised if more live-action films receive the emoji treatment in the future.
We’ll certainly be hoping for Star Wars: Episode 8, which arrives in December 2017. Until then, check out the real Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Blu-Ray/DVD or digital streaming.
