Steam Summer Sale dates have officially been revealed, according to a recent tweet from PayPal U.K. The message suggests the sale will begin as soon as June 22 at 1 p.m. EDT and could run through July 5.
“It’s official,” the tweet reads, “the Steam Summer Sale starts 22/6 at 6 p.m. BST.” PayPal customers will reportedly receive an extra £5 off most standard purchase prices as well. This perk seems to be exclusive to the U.K, as the U.S. PayPal Twitter account has offered no indication of its existence yet. Considering the promotion runs through July 5, we imagine that’s when all discounts will end.
This news, of course, arrives before an official announcement has been made by Valve, but it comes from a reliable source. PayPal has leaked every Steam Winter and Summer Sale for the past two years, long before Valve made its own reveals. In that sense, Valve is probably well aware of what PayPal is doing, officials have simply allowed it to happen.
For what it’s worth, these details line up perfectly with a Summer Sale leak that emerged in early May. Apparently developers were told of these exact same dates about a month ago. Even the projected start time differs by just 10 minutes. Giving publishers a few weeks to prepare their respective sale lineups, we now believe that initial source to be accurate.
For those totally out of the loop about what the Steam Summer Sale potentially offers, it’s the season’s best chance to score huge savings on both old and new PC games. For a bit of perspective, last year’s biggest deals included cut costs on The Wither 3, ARK: Survival Evolved and Tomb Raider titles. In other words, there’s a lot of big-name products on the roster. Indie titles are featured too, but generally only the cream of the crop gets the most attention.
As expected, the promotion is also a major revenue booster for Valve. Last year’s Steam Summer Sale raked in a total of $230 million in just over a week. That’s a 70 percent increase over 2015’s numbers.
While the Summer Sale hasn’t been quite as unbelievable in recent years, there’s still a lot of great games we expect to see getting price cuts over the next few days. Having not captured too much interest in the way of mass appeal, this year’s Prey reboot seems like a pretty solid contender. On the indie side, we’d love to see What Remains Of Edith Finch get some much needed attention. It’s one of the PS4’s highest rated games, and it offers a unique experience that would be even better with a few dollars shaved off its sticker price. In addition to that, it’s safe to assume PC classics will be heavily featured too. If you’re looking for bundles of Fallout, The Elder Scrolls or Mass Effect games, those seem to be highlighted quite often.
