It looks like SteamWorld Dig 2 won’t be entirely exclusive to the Nintendo Switch after all. Image & Form Games have confirmed plans to publish its next SteamWorld release on Steam. And PC users won’t even have to wait much longer than Switch owners for the SteamWorld Dig sequel.
We’ve known about SteamWorld Dig 2 since the end of February, when Image & Form published the project’s first trailer. The next game in the series introduces a new protagonist, whose name has not been revealed, but will otherwise deliver more of the mining and Metroidvania action fans of the first SteamWorld Dig are looking for. The accompanying video description for the trailer confirmed SWD2 would be available on the Switch and confirmed we’d see the sequel on at least one other platform. But it has taken four months, and an appearance during Nintendo’s E3 2017 presentation, to get clarification on the matter.
The good news is SteamWorld Dig 2 will also be available on Steam later this year. And SWD2 ’s period of Switch exclusivity won’t be long. The bad news is that we still don’t know exactly when that will be. There’s no launch date for the PC port yet. SteamWorld Dig 2 is listed on Steam and Image & Form is encouraging fans of the first SteamWorld Dig to add the sequel to their wishlist so they’re notified when it’s available for purchase. Unfortunately, the closest we get to a launch date is a “Late Summer/Early Fall 2017” timeline. The only real benefit to seeing SteamWorld Dig 2 on Steam (right now) are the handful of screenshots also included on the page: screenshots that also reveal an enemy type we didn’t see in the first game.
