The first batch of promotional media for Strange Brigade, a new third-person shooter from the studio behind the Sniper Elite and Zombie Army franchises, has been published ahead of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. The new trailer doesn’t tell us much about the game’s story or characters. It doesn’t even include gameplay. But the clip still provides a basic idea of what to expect from Rebellion’s next project when Strange Brigade hits PC and consoles later this year.
Meaningful information about Strange Brigade is still almost non-existent. We know the game will be a cooperative third-person shooter, playable solo or in teams of two to four players. Strange Brigade is set in the 1930s and stars a team of (presumably British) explorers on assignment in a remote corner of the British Empire. But this isn’t an archaeology simulator. If anything, the game’s first trailer suggests Strange Brigade could be a strange amalgamation of Indiana Jones and Left 4 Dead. Zombies, an Egyptian deity and a minotaur all make appearances in the game’s first cinematic trailer. But a corresponding press release for the project is nearly devoid of useful information about Strange Brigade.
Here’s the relevant text:
There are remote corners of the British Empire where the supernatural lurks and the shadows linger, where few dare go and fewer return. In Strange Brigade you'll encounter fantastic and forgotten civilizations shrouded in mystery, uncover treacherous tombs and test your wits against unfathomable foes...
You'll explore the ancient world as one of four dashing explorers, each blessed with their own weapons, tactics, and special superhuman powers...
You'll fight back-to-back against a terrifying army of mythological menaces, unleashed by no less than a resurrected Egyptian witch queen! With such ungodly evil afoot, the Strange Brigade needs YOU!
The studio promises to say more during E3 2017, which begins in less than a week, but it’s not clear whether we can expect gameplay or if the studio just plans to release more details about the project. Hopefully we’ll get more information about the game’s structure -- like whether it’s a full campaign, a series of missions or even self-contained stories (like in L4D) -- and the civilizations we’ll visit while playing Strange Brigade. It would also be nice to know if/how treasure-hunting will factor into the equation. And maybe a bit more information on some stereotyping from the trailer.
