Some Destiny 2 release date news has emerged in a recent financial report. A sequel to Destiny and a “large new expansion,” were officially confirmed, according to the Activision Blizzard report.
Buried in Activision Blizzard’s fourth quarter and full year 2015 financial results is this tidbit:
“Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017.”
Destiny ’s first expansion, The Taken King, received a nod of critical approval all round. In our own review of Destiny: The Taken King , we stated, “ Destiny is a better game now and The Taken King is the closest thing we’ve seen to an appropriately-sized expansion since the game’s September 2014 debut. And collecting/firing an assortment of digital firearms has never felt so good.”
In a news post on Bungie.net, the Destiny team also confirmed that a big new update was on its way for spring, which should help to assuage doubts about Destiny’s future.
“Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability. Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017,” the team wrote.
Previously, the Destiny team had stated that a lot of content was on the way as fast as they could deliver it. “The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost. The second will be far larger than anything you’ve seen since the release of The Taken King . There’s also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window… This year, the plan is to deliver new experiences at a faster clip. To that end, the updates described above are all currently slated to hit across Winter and Spring of 2016, with more to come, as well.”
A spring content update and a big expansion look like just a few of the things in store for Destiny in 2016. The news of a sequel coming up in 2017 is great news for fans of Destiny who have stuck with it since its troubled launch.
Will all of this prove to be a jolt in the arm for Destiny malaise ? Maybe. An infusion of new content, from lore to weapons to simply more stuff to do, is certainly much-called for by Destiny’s dedicated community, whose 25 million registered users strong have logged nearly 3 billion hours in the game. Currently, the game’s Valentine’s Day event is underway.
