Fallout 4 offers a variety of companions to help you as you explore the wastelands of Boston. You can choose from a total of 13 companions with distinct abilities, personalities and perks. You might even get lucky with some of the human companions as long as you say and do the right things. Check out the guide below for the companions locations in no particular order.
Codsworth
- Location: Sanctuary
- Associated Quest: None
- Romance: No
- Perk: Robot Sympathy
Codsworth is your loyal robot butler. He’s tried to keep your home together for the last 200+ years. While he’s not the best in combat, his Robot Sympathy perk is handy when you’re dealing with Synths as your character will gain +10 Damage Resistance against robot’s energy attacks. Codsworth can be judgemental and doesn’t like it when you hoard junk. Prepare for some snarky comments with Codsworth around.
Dogmeat
- Location: Red Rocket Truck Stop
- Associated Quest: None
- Romance: No
- Perk: None
Dogmeat is your first official companion in Fallout 4. He is extremely loyal to his owner and will do anything to defend you. Dogmeat latches on to enemies and provides a distraction as you prepare to take your shot. You can also play with Dogmeat and he’ll perform tricks for you.
Paladin Danse
- Location: Cambridge Police Station

- Perk: Know Your Enemy
Paladin Danse is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. Danse’s Know Your Enemy perk gives allows you to deal 20 percent more damage against ghouls, super mutants, and synths. It’s a great bonus to have in the beginning of the game. You will randomly found the Call to Arms while emptying the assembly plant in an early mission.
Piper

- Perk: Gift of Gab
Piper is the feisty journalist you meet early on in Diamond City. She carries a custom pistol, but the real perk of having Piper around is she gives you double the XP for completing speech challenges and discovering new locations. She’s a good companion if your character has high Charisma stats.
Preston Garvey
- Location: Museum of Freedom
- Associated Quest: None
- Romance: Yes
- Perk: United We Stand
Preston Garvey is the last Minutemen in the Commonwealth. He carries a laser musket and helps you establish new settlements. Garvey’s perk United We Stand increases your character's Damage Resistance by 20 percent and give your player 20 percent more damage when outnumbered.
Nick Valentine
- Location: Vault 114 (Park Street Station)
- Associated Quest: Side Quest: Long Time Coming
- Romance: No
- Perk: Close to Metal
Nick Valentine is a Synth male who has quickly become a favorite companion amongst iDigi staff. He has two weapons: his fists and his revolver. He’s an expert hacker and pretty resiliant in battle. He isn’t affected by radiation, which makes him invaluable in the wastelands. Valentine’s perk gives the player one more guess to dial the password in terminals. Also, terminals have 50 percent less time to wait after your are locked out when Valentine is by your side.
Cait

- Romance: Yes
- Perk: Trigger Rush
Cait is an expert lock picker. Her perk gives allows player’s Action Points to regenerate 25 percent faster if the Hit Points value is below 25 percent of its maximum.
Curie
- Location: Vault 81
- Associated Quest: Side Quest (Companion): Emergent Behavior
- Romance: Yes
- Perk: Combat Medic
Curie is a robotic laboratory assistant kind of like Codsworth. She’s a healer and uses a flamethrower to torch her enemies. Her perk Combat Medic allows the play to heal 100 Hit Points if their current number of Hit Points is below 10 percent.
X6-88
- Location: The Institute
- Associated Quest: None
- Romance: No
- Perk: Shield Harmonics
X6-88 is another Synth male in the game. You’ll find him later in the game when you visit The Institute. He’s built for combat and uses advanced energy weaponry to defend you in battle. His perk Shield Harmonics gives increases your character's Energy Resistance by 20 percent if hit by an energy weapon.
Strong

- Perk: Berserk
Strong is a tank! He’s built to take damage and beat things up. Strong’s perk Beserk gives your character 20 percent more Melee Damage if the number of Hit Points is 25 percent of original value.
Deacon
- Location: Old North Church

- Perk: Cloak & Dagger
Deacon is the perfect companion for stealth play styles. His perk Cloak & Dagger gives your character 20 percent more sneak attack damage and the duration of effects of Stealth Boys are increased by 20 percent.
John Hancock

- Perk: Isodoped
Hancock is the only Ghoul you can romance in this game. The perk increases the player’s Critical Hit value by 20 percent if you have 250 Radiation value.
MacCready

- Perk: Killshot
MacCready is a good ally if you rely on your V.A.T.S. The Killshot perk gives players a 20 percent greater chance to hit an enemy's head in V.A.T.S.
