Although filming of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is “virtually completed,” according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the world has seen very little from the set. But new leaks from sources close to Making Star Wars offer some insight into what to expect from Disney’s first stand-alone Star Wars movie. We’ve previously covered rumors that Darth Vader would make a major appearance in Rogue One , but new info from the production focuses on the Empire’s humble workhorse: the Stormtrooper.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story seems to be shaping up as more of a war movie than any previous Star Wars film. Instead of following the heroes and the Force wielders, Rogue One is about the ground-level troops taking the fight to the Empire, with a special focus on a team of bounty hunters, mercenaries, and rebels who successfully capture the plans to the Death Star and deliver them to Princess Leia aboard the Tantive IV just in time for her to get captured by Darth Vader (as seen at the beginning of the original Star Wars).
With Rogue One’s special focus on the ground troops and misfits of the Rebel Alliance, it’s clear that hundreds, if not thousands, of stormtroopers will be required to portray the anticipated large-scale ground battles.
Appropriately enough, a virtual assembly line was established for the task:

But Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will feature more than just the familiar Original Trilogy-era stormtrooper. Making Star Wars has reported rumors on several varieties of stormtrooper that we can expect to see in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
A desert-themed stormtrooper will be featured prominently in at least one battle.
Though they’ve been called “sandtroopers” on the Rogue One set, Making Star Wars claims the desert camo troopers will be officially known as “scarab troopers.” They’ve even provided a mock-up based on descriptions from people who’ve seen the scarab troopers in action:
Even less is known about two other stormtroopers rumored to appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story .
According to Jason Ward of Making Star Wars, we can also expect to see stormtroopers from an elite unit called the “Death Squad.” According to Ward’s leaks from the Rogue One set, these stormtroopers will wear all-black uniforms.
Ward also reports a fourth variety of stormtrooper, even more mysterious than the rest and as seemingly elusive as Bigfoot. All we have is a name: “Pinnacle Trooper.”
In all likelihood we can expect even more varieties of stormtroopers to appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , but we’ll have to wait for the Dec. 16 release date to see for ourselves.
