Black Canary’s death was the biggest twist of Arrow Season 4, so far. There will be a lot of grieving in tonight's episode, “Canary Cry.” Team Arrow will attend Laurel Lance’s funeral and deal with the loss of their fellow vigilante. However, when the CW released the synopsis for Season 4 episode 19 a phrase in particular caught my eye. There's been "a recent Black Canary sighting in Star City."
This came as a big surprise to Arrow fans, who expected Laurel Lance was gone for good. Especially considering Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim shot down all fake death rumors during an interview following the heartbreaking episode.
However, according to Bleeding Cool’s insider source, someone is going to be picking up the Black Canary’s mantle. This prompted Guggenheim to address the rumors with The Hollywood Reporter, and he subsequently confirmed that “Canary Cry” will toy with the idea of a new Black Canary.
The producer cryptically added, “And that doesn't always mean that the person is a hero.” Making matters even more suspicious, the CW has casted Madison McLaughlin in a mystery role starting in episode 19. The young woman is described as “smart,” “snarky” and an “escapee of a dangerous cult.”
All clues so far point to the recently cast Supernatural actress as the ‘new’ Black Canary. Here’s all the evidence we have:
A set photo leak shows Dinah Lance (Alex Kingston), Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) and McLaughlin attending Black Canary’s funeral together. Interesting enough, Black Canary’s identity in the comics is Dinah Lance, not Laurel. However, the photos of the new Black Canary doesn’t exactly fit Dinah’s description.
The “Canary Cry” trailer reveals the imposter Black Canary stole Laurel’s sonic device. Obviously, the new Black Canary is highly trained in combat. Since she’s pictured with Nyssa at the funeral, it's possible they worked together in the League of Assassins. Since Nyssa is close to the Lance family, she could have stolen the sonic device from Laurel’s hospital room.
The rumor mill suggests Felicity could take on Laurel’s secret identity, but the same insiders who caught funeral scene photos refute the idea she is the new Black Canary. As I’m sure you picked up from the “Canary Cry” scene above, Felicity is present when the team finds out there is an imposter.
Guggenheim told TV Line there is a very interesting story involving [McLaughlin’s] character that is something we haven’t done on the show, and is something I don’t think any show has ever done.”
