The Rick and Morty Season 2 premiere date is just a few days away, with the premiere set for July 26 on Adult Swim. But in a new Wall Street Journal article about Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon tried to adjust our soaring expectations a bit. His gentle negging of the Rick and Morty Season 2 premiere joins statements co-creator Justin Roiland made on a podcast in January.
Rick and Morty Season 2 Premiere Terrible?
Roiland appeared on The Jeff Rubin Show in January and talked a little bit about Rick and Morty Season 2. “I probably shouldn’t say this…” Roiland began, “the first episode back in Season 2 I fucking hate.” Asked to elaborate, Roiland had this to say:
“I only said that out of fear that I’m right, and then just lowering everyone’s expectations. As much as I’m sure everyone would be furious with me if that became some kind of story out of this interview, I would love it. Because then everyone’s going, oh, well, lower your expectations for the first one.”
As showrunner of Community Harmon undoubtedly has more experience with the way off-the-cuff press statements can get out of hand. Yet he doesn’t exactly jump to the Rick and Morty Season 2 premiere’s defense in the WSJ piece. “At some point I got it in my head we needed to blow minds,” Harmon said. “It’s a fine episode, but I don’t think the difficulty in writing and producing it translated into customer satisfaction.”
So what is the nature of this mysterious, maybe terrible Rick and Morty Season 2 premiere? The first reveal is that the Rick and Morty Season 2 premiere runs in close continuity to the end of Season 1, picking up with time still frozen. Things don’t go well when Rick, Morty, and Summer restart time, “ The time fractures multiply in the new episode. At one point the picture divides into 32 panels, each featuring an almost identical scene, as Rick, Morty and Summer accidentally create parallel realities.”
Real talk time. Like many, I couldn’t resist watching the two leaked episodes. I don’t think things are quite so dire as Roiland and Harmon make it sound. There’s still a lot to look forward to when Rick and Morty Season 2 premieres on July 26.
