The House of Cards season 3 release date is less than 48 hours away, and reviews are already starting to drop. Soon, we’ll all be able to binge watch the latest season of Netflix’s best original together, and not long after that… we’ll be done. And then it’ll be time to ask… is this the end? Or is there going to be a House of Cards season 4? I haven’t seen the season yet any more than you have, but there are several reasons to think this isn’t the end. Let’s take a look at them.

1. Because Kevin Spacey And Kate Mara Say It Isn’t
Kevin Spacey has said that House of Cards will go 12 seasons. That’s obviously a joke (He’s also said it could go for 37). According to Metro UK, though, Kate Mara—who played Zoe—also said that the producers “could go with the story as long as they want,” and that the show was in no imminent danger of ending. That was back before season 2 premiered, of course, but the point stands: There’s plenty of room for material here.
2. Because The Executive Producer Says It Probably Isn’t
Okay, better reason: Beau Willimon, the executive producer of the show, who actually knows these sorts of things, hasn’t ruled out other seasons either. All he’s really said is that the writing team doesn’t hold back and treats every season like it could be the last. They don’t hold onto their best ideas for a future that may never come. But that doesn’t mean the show can’t continue; honestly, it’s the opposite. By not holding anything back, they’re making the show better, which makes it more likely to get another season.
3. Because Why Would It Be?
House of Cards is a hit. Season 3 will probably be the biggest one yet when it premieres on Friday, and, along with the execrable Orange Is The New Black, it’s the flagship original show for Netflix’s original content game. And it ain’t going to be replaced by Legend of Zelda. They have no reason to cancel it, not as long as Spacey and Wright are still on board. They can’t exactly follow the British show anymore—they’ve covered a lot of that, and the British sequels involve the monarchy so closely that they wouldn’t really translate here—which leaves House of Cards unfettered to do basically whatever it wants. There are tons of threads to ensure Underwood’s eventual downfall—hey, it has to happen sooner or later—but those threads don’t all have to be teased just yet.
My guess: House of Cards season 3 will set the trap in place for Frank’s fall, but it won’t ensnare him just yet. The season will begin with him in a position of strength and end in a position of weakness—leaving enough to our imagination that the show could theoretically end there, but leaving tons of room for a fourth season and beyond. And honestly, I think we’ll get it.
