Suicide Squad director David Ayer was expecting harsh criticism of the film after Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was ripped to shreds by moviegoers.
Ayer recently spoke to Joblo.com about the upcoming DC movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot and Jared Leto as The Joker. The director was asked if he felt pressure for the film to score high marks with critics after many bashed the overstuffed Batman vs. Superman movie. Ayer told Joblo.com he liked Batman vs. Superman despite the negative reviews and is proud of his work on the film.
“I think the pressure is always to make a good movie, and in this day and age you have to expect the pressure,” Ayer said. “We kind of started out as the cool little brother, and now there's definitely a lot of scrutiny, but they're doing amazing things over there. Geoff Johns really has a handle on where this universe is going. A lot of talented directors, it's going to be a beautiful thing. I'm pretty confident, and I'm proud to be one of the ships in this big fleet that's coming at the world.”
The first wave of Suicide Squad movie reviews are pouring in and it looks like the movie is ahead of Batman vs. Superman on Rotten Tomatoes, but not by much. The reviews on the site so far are pretty harsh with one review from ScreenCrush calling the film, “Bland, boring, and sometimes borderline incoherent.”
Suicide Squad officially hit theaters Aug. 3.
