David Harewood’s Martian Manhunter was my favorite part of Supergirl’s debut season on CBS. The multi-talented, gentle and green Mars-born extraterrestrial is Supergirl’s most trusted superpowered ally when it comes to protecting National City. That all may change when we meet Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, but for now, J’onn J’onnz is the man. Many thought the series’ move to The CW would mean big casting changes, possibly even Harewood’s departure. However, the actor debunked those rumors today when he revealed the title of the Supergirl Season 2 premiere, and it’s a phrase very familiar to DC Comics fans: “The Adventures of Supergirl.”
The title is a play on one of the many iterations of “The Adventures of Superman,” and certainly a nod to Clark Kent’s impending introduction into the Arrowverse. It’s unclear if Martian Manhunter has already met Clark Kent. So far, it’s just Jimmy Olsen who’s up to date on Superman’s whereabouts--and he’s pretty damn good at keeping all the dirty deets on the low. Unlike other DC TV shows, Supergirl ’s primary heroes all come from alternate Earths, so watching Martian Manhunter, Superman and Supergirl fight side-by-side would be quite a sight to behold.
How exactly The CW plans to integrate Supergirl into the existing Arrowverse has yet to be revealed. There’s always the chance Superman, or the Martian Manhunter, could play a part in building the connection to Arrow, The Flash and Legends instead of Supergirl herself.
However, Superman isn’t the only character that could act as the bond between all four DC TV shows. The Madame President of the United States has been alluded to many times, most recently in the Supergirl season finale, when she pardoned J’onn J’onzz and restored his position as head of the DEO. Like Superman, we’ll finally be able to put a face to the name in the early episodes of Supergirl Season 2. None other than Lynda Carter – praised for her portrayal of Wonder Woman in the iconic 1975 live action TV series of the same name – will serve as the President of the United States and her presence may be felt across the Arrowverse.
Lex Luthor’s sister Lena, veteran journalist “Snapper” Carr, proud detective Maggie Sawyer, a villainous female doctor and a new ambitious Cat Co. employee, Nick Farrow, are also all set to join the cast in the upcoming season. Read more about those characters here.
Supergirl moves to the CW on Monday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m.
