SyFy’s Superman prequel, Krypton, has been ordered to series. The show follows Superman’s grandfather two generations before the destruction of their home planet, Krypton. According to SyFy’s press release, the plot takes place in a time when House of El was ostracized and shamed. Superman’s grandfather “fights to redeem his family's honor and save his beloved world from chaos.”
The pilot was written by David S. Goyer (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel), who will also executive produce. Goyer developed the series’ storyline alongside Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time), and they’ll write the rest of the show together. Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders) will direct and co-produce.
"Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe," said NBC Executive VP or Scripted Content, Bill McGoldrick. “This exciting SyFy project will take viewers back to Superman's home to show how the timeless legend began."
According to Deadline, Krypton is special agreement between the DC Comics character’s creator, Jerry Siegel. Krypton was rumored to be in the works as far back as 2014. Variety reports the series takes place 200 years ago and Superman’s grandfather wants to bring “hope and equality” back to Krypton.
“It involves more of the mythology than I think people realize,” Goyer teased in late 2015. “A lot more.”
Superman’s grandfather, Seyg-El (also known as Jor-El I), invented the experimental rocket ship that would later bring Kal-El to safety on Earth before the ultimate collapse of Krypton. The series will hopefully give us more insight into why Krypton exploded, and what Kal-El’s life would have been like if he grew up on his home planet instead of Earth.
Krypton joins several successful DC Comics shows currently airing. Fox's Batman prequel Gotham, CBS’s Supergirl, and three CW shows: The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.
Krypton doesn’t have an official release date.
