The giant China-based video games publisher and multinational conglomerate Tencent has just debuted SYN, a cyberpunk themed game that they are calling “a globally marketed PC and console open-world first-person shooter”. A tech demo was shown during the company’s annual Tencent Games press conference.
The three-minute trailer introduces some of the game’s details, such as it being powered by Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. SYN will be set in 2035 in a dystopic future, filled with the bright neon lights of ads, futuristic buildings, and some small vestiges of Chinese architecture. It then centers on the tech demo’s main event: SYN's character creation and customization. We are given a look at a default character that gives off strong Harley Quinn vibes, accompanied by a Zoids-looking leopard robot. In the video, players are able to customize their character’s hairstyle, face paint, and outfit colorways. Tencent has put an importance on hair, boasting “extremely realistic effects achieved with our strand-based hair system through cooperation with Epic Games.”
We were also given a glimpse into the game’s pet system. Players have the ability to get a cybernetic pet of their own choosing. As shown in the video, players can choose from bears, leopards, and I’m assuming more in the future. They can also be customized such as changing their color, face markings, and armor colorways. Lastly, some of the game’s vehicles are shown, each customizable and with their own sets of stats. The aesthetics are certainly top-notch, but we’ll have to wait to see if the execution of the rest will be up to par with its striking visuals.
No other details have been unveiled yet regarding the release date of SYN, but it is already confirmed to release on PC and consoles. Right now, we can only wait and anticipate for further news from Tencent. Tencent Holdings Ltd. is a Chinese multinational conglomerate known for their shares and interests in internet services and products, some of which include the news and social media site Reddit and a majority stake in Riot Games, the publisher of the highly popular MOBA League of Legends.
