With the recent release of Terminator: Dark Fate in theaters, publisher Reef Entertainment and developer Teyon now are preparing fans for the impending release of the single-player first-person shooter Terminator: Resistance, the latest game based on the movie franchise. The publisher and developer have released a new combat trailer which highlights a good chunk of what we can expect in terms of gameplay, as well as 10 minutes of gameplay video for those looking to find out how Terminator: Resistance actually plays. Check out both below.
The trailer starts out decently by prefacing the events leading up to Terminator: Resistance, with the game taking place 30 years after the events of the franchise’s so-called ‘Judgment Day,’ as highlighted in the second film in the series, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It’s an expansion on the Future War, a dark apocalyptic wasteland in which humanity is embroiled in a bitter war against the machines following the actions of Skynet, a rogue artificial intelligence and main antagonist of the series.
The premise is ripe for a great action-oriented shooter, but after seeing more of the trailer and the gameplay footage one has to feel a lack of impact with the gameplay itself. Some textures feel outdated, and the shooting itself looks floaty and uneventful. That said, it could still turn out to be a decent first-person shooter, one that can be appreciated by die-hard fans of the series.
Lore-wise, it might also be a must-play, especially after series creator James Cameron’s retcon of franchise events after Judgment Day. While Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation, Terminator Genisys and the television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles weren’t exactly decanonized, they are now described as occurring in alternate timelines, seeing as the series is quite flexible thanks to time travel mechanics. It remains to be seen how Terminator: Resistance will fit into the series plot-wise, with players experiencing the game through the eyes of a basic soldier in the Resistance Pacific Division named Jacob Rivers.
Terminator: Resistance will be released in Europe and Australia on November 15, while the North American release has been delayed back to December 10. It will be made available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
