To everyone's surprise, Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall 2 has recently seen a sudden spike in the active player count after Apex Legends' Northstar story trailer. If you didn't already know, Northstar is one of the seven titans within the game. Given that Apex Legends is set in the same universe as Titanfall 2, and shares almost the same arsenal of weapons, the free-to-play battle royale was well-received by Titanfall 2 fans. However, nobody can really explain the sudden rise in the player count. Nonetheless, I think nostalgia could be a reason and as I am writing the story, I would probably jump into the game again after a long time.
Titanfall 2 was released four years ago and the game was a breath of fresh air for FPS players who have always been used to boots on the ground combat. It introduced wall runs, jetpacks, double jumps, and freaking titans! Despite Respawn's best efforts, this amazing game was overshadowed by giants like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1, which launched around the same time as Titanfall 2. It has been estimated that the latter only sold about 4 million copies but EA expected the game to sell more.
Fast forward to February of 2019, Respawn surprised the world with the release of Apex Legends. This newer game was built on similar gameplay mechanics as Titanfall 2, featuring fast-paced gameplay and movement. The game has now become one of the most-player and most-loved battle royale games by gamers.
With the launch of Apex Legends' new legend Valkyrie trailer, Respawn has established a strong link between the two games. Valkyrie is a female legend who seems to have excellent flying capabilities and uses a similar salvo launcher tech as Titanfall 2's Northstar.
If you haven't played Titanfall 2 yet, this may be the right time to pick up the game either on Origin or Steam. Nobody really knows when the player count may drop, and it could happen quite quickly.
Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
