The first official trailer for Tokyo 42, an isometric action game from indie studio SMAC, is out this week. It technically isn’t the first we’ve seen of the game, thanks to early promotion from publisher Mode 7, but the new Tokyo 42 clip is the first to receive any significant attention from the majority of the gaming community.
According to SMAC, Tokyo 42 is an isometric action game inspired by classics like Syndicate and the first Grand Theft Auto. The game’s combination of bright colors, paired with the ability to rotate and explore each level, feels reminiscent of games like Fez or Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker but the gameplay in Tokyo 42 has a noticeably darker tone. Instead of hunting for treasures or solving puzzles, the game asks players to drive, shoot and generally rampage their way through vibrant mazes of streets, buildings and alleyways. It’s not clear what the ultimate goal of Tokyo 42 will be, whether it’s stage-based or narrative-focused, but the gameplay footage we’ve seen thus far certainly has us intrigued.
For a closer look at Tokyo 42, take a couple of minutes to check out the announcement trailer embedded at the top of this post and/or review the early alpha playthrough and behind-the-scenes mini-documentary published by Mode 7 earlier this summer. Then head down to the comments section and let us know whether or not you’re planning to buy Tokyo 42 when it debuts next year.
Tokyo 42 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game is expected to debut sometime in early 2017.
