The highly successful Metroidvania title Touhou Luna Nights from the PC will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch soon. The announcement was made during the latest Touhou Station live stream, which you can view below. (Time stamps at 1:28:23 to 1:30:01).
For those who aren’t familiar with the game, Touhou Luna Nights is a 2D search action game that is inspired by the famous Touhou bullet hell titles from Japan. Touhou Luna Nights began its journey as a Steam Early Access title in August of 2018 and it had its launch for version 1.0 on February 25, 2019.
Currently, Touhou Luna Nights is sitting on an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam and deservedly so. It provides a very smooth gameplay experience, with tight and intuitive controls that rids the game of unnecessary mechanics and fillers. Its pixel art aesthetics may divide audiences, but that is negligible since what makes or breaks a Metroidvania title is its gameplay mechanics. Lastly, it also includes an amazing track list which comes from the remixes of Touhou tracks. Another knock against it may be its considerably short playtime in comparison to its peers in the Metroidvania genre, but its fulfilling gameplay experience more than makes up for it.
Aside from its critical success, Touhou Luna Nights has also recently reached a monumental commercial achievement, by reaching 100,000 downloads on Steam just mere months after its launch. Developer Team Ladybug made this statement after reaching the milestone:
“To be honest, we are truly surprised by all the support we’ve received from so many players out there. We are extremely happy to see how much players like the graphics and game systems we’ve worked so hard to create. From here on out, we will continue to strive to create games enjoyable by both children and adults alike, and we greatly appreciate your invaluable and ongoing support.”
The undeniable critical and commercial success of Touhou Luna Nights on the PC should undoubtedly reach greater heights on console; this time, on the Nintendo Switch. For fans of the sleeper hit, there is still some waiting to be done as no release date has been announced yet.
