Just last month, we found ourselves believing True Detective had died. A profile of HBO exec Casey Bloys stated that instead of a third season, “HBO sources suggest a new project from [True Detective] creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely.” The decision was unfortunate, though understandable considering Season 2’s horrific performance — both critically and ratings-wise. But now True Detective may have a new shot at life, if HBO is willing to take Season 1 star Matthew McConaughey’s comments seriously.
During a recent interview on the Rich Eisen Show (via EW), McConaughey was asked if he would considering joining True Detective for Season 3. “Yeah, I would,” the Emmy nominee said. “I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights. … I was a happy man when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island.”
McConaughey’s performance as Rust Cohle earned the actor rave reviews and further propelled the “McConaissance,” a stage of his career that has garnered critical acclaim. However, True Detective, *true* to its anthology series format, replaced Season 1’s cast with Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams. It didn’t do nearly as well.
While last month’s reports suggested True Detective had met its end, McConaughey allegedly discussed a potential role in Season 3, should it ever come about. “It would have to be the right context, the right way,” McConaughey told Eisen. “That thing — when I read it, I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I’m in.”
Well well well, HBO fans. The universe closes the door on one thing (RIP Vinyl) and opens the door for another. If McConaughey reprises his role for True Detective Season 3, I, like many others, will flock back to the series every Sunday night.
