While many Apple iPhone and iPad users are eagerly awaiting the release of the iOS 9 update, one mobile payment company, iZettle, is warning customers away from the new software. According to iZettle, a mobile payment company that makes the Card Reader Pro and Pro Contactless (systems for accepting contactless card payments and Apple Pay), the new iOS 9 completely breaks their system. On iOS 9 the card readers begin experiencing problems when users try to pair them via Bluetooth. During the pairing process, iOS 9 causes the Bluetooth to be shut off, rendering contactless card payment through iZettle’s devices completely impossible.
According to iZettle, Apple has been informed of the problem with Bluetooth disconnecting while trying to pair the contactless card reader, and acknowledged it. Apple has promised a solution in the next update of iOS 9 (maybe the reason an iOS 9.1 beta has already been released!), but until that time iZettle customers are out of luck if they update. For that reason, iZettle is recommending clients not upgrade their dependent devices until the issue is resolved. Additional information about the problem can be found on iZettle's support page.
iZettle is a Stockholm, Sweden, based company established in 2010. iZettle’s contactless card readers are growing in use in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Mexico, and Brazil. The card readers allow payment through iPhone or Android and also support Apple Pay. Though so far iZettle is the only contactless card payment system that has identified a problem with Apple’s new iOS 9 breaking the Bluetooth connection, they may not be alone. Apple users have had a multitude of Bluetooth problems over the last few iterations of iOS; iOS 9 appears to be no exception.
If you are in fact an iZettle customer then, as the company has suggested, we recommend you hold off in updating to iOS 9 until Apple has released the appropriate fix.
