The Walking Dead Director Greg Nicotero is either toying with fans or just confirmed the major theory about the big Negan scene coming up in Season 7.
Nicotero recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere coming up this October. Nicotero followed the same script most of the other cast members have in their interviews, claiming the show will be so different now that Negan is around . But when you look closer at his quotes about The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, you’ll see an interesting choice of words when talking about the Lucille victim .
“But I’d say in retrospect, I don’t think we would have changed anything,” Nicotero told EW . “I would have still supported doing it the way that we did it, because of the fact that the story doesn’t end there. If we would have shown the deaths, then they wouldn’t have felt our characters in Season 7 the way they need to. And the thing that I think a lot of people will get out of it is how that moment changes the entire makeup of our universe within a split second. And it’s that moment that launches our entire Season 7 into that direction.”
Nicotero said deaths , not death . Plural, not singular, meaning Negan could take Lucille out for more than one person. It’s possible Nicotero could have misspoke, but that’s probably not the case. If you’ve been following The Walking Dead rumor mill, you know there’s a specific theory out there that names not one but TWO Lucille victims in the Season 7 return . We won’t name the characters here, but you can check out this article to learn more about the theory.
Of course, it’s also possible a character from Rick’s group kills one of Negan’s men in the heat of the moment, but it doesn’t seem likely, as it would be a huge risk for one of them to take. Negan has his men surround Rick’s little army in the Season 6 finale, so impulsively killing a Savior won’t end well.
No matter who Negan kills in The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere, the new villain has already established his dominance by crippling Rick with fear and self-doubt. Rick will have to learn a new way of life that doesn’t include going on covert missions and taking out his enemies in their sleep.
