The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman sees the controversy surrounding the TV show’s recent finale as a good thing for fans.

Kirkman recently spoke to Screen Rant about what’s to come in The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere. Kirkman understands why fans didn’t like not knowing who Negan killed in The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, but is happy with the confusion it caused. The Walking Dead creator believes the cliffhanger is enough to distract comic fans from trying to figure out what’s going on in the upcoming season.

“There’s a lot of really great stuff coming,” Kirkman told Screen Rant . “I love that people have been focusing so much on this cliffhanger because it has distracted them from analyzing what happened in the books around that time, and what is possibly coming in the seventh season. It’s pretty great. I mean, Negan has been introduced. He’s going to be this ever-present threat in the show from now on.”

Kirkman continued, “This amazing 12 minutes that we got in Season 6 is going to be nearly every episode now for a while moving forward. We’re going to be expanding the world at the same time. So we’re going to have this huge catalyst, these saviors, this Negan guy walking around doing all kinds of horrible stuff. At the same time, we’re going to be introducing a lot of new characters. We just revealed yesterday that we’re introducing Ezekiel.”

We might not know who Negan’s victim is, but we do know Rick’s group won’t be the same after the encounter. Rick underestimated Negan as a threat and now must suffer the consequences. Watching Rick and the rest of the group recover from witnessing the death of one of their own will make for an interesting season. The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
