Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell are making a sci-fi movie and they’ve just released a 10-minute short to raise money to finish the film. The two cousins have been longing to work together since they were cast on two separate CW shows, Arrow and The Flash , where Stephen plays the Green Arrow and Robbie played Firestorm. Robbie was also cast as an FBI agent in the recent X-Files revival series.
A short teaser for their film, Code 8, linked to a featurette countdown was posted on Stephen Amell’s Facebook page early March. The Code 8 website now links to an indiegogo campaign where the cousins are hoping to raise $200,000 to produce the movie. So far, they’ve raised $75,000.
The film follows Robbie Amell, a supernatural human with electric powers, as he faces discrimination from the police officers in the community. Code 8 is set in a world where 4 percent of the population has supernatural abilities, but gifted people make up for 60 percent of arrests. The ‘specials,’ as they are called in the film, live in poverty and have a difficult time finding work and resort to crime to pay the bills. In response, the police in this society use advanced technology to maintain absolute control.
Prior to the release of the short, it was unclear if Stephen Amell would play a role or just serve as an executive producer. He was the voice of the police drone-copter, but didn’t act in the 10-minute clip. In a 2-minute video where the cousins announce their fundraising campaign, Stephen Amell says he will act in the full-length film, but was too busy with Arrow and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to appear in the short.
Sung Kang ( The Fast And Furiou s) plays a police officer and Aaron Abrahms ( Hannibal, Blindspot ) plays Robbie’s friend who was shot and killed by police. Jeff Chan and Chris Pare, who both worked on Activation’s Call Of Duty: Operation Kingfish , will serve as producers.
If Code 8 sticks to schedule, the film will premiere October 2017.
