Pokémon legendaries create mountains and the sea, bend space and time and can even create life. Pokémon has 43 legendary monsters in its pantheon of mythical beasts, and sometimes I long for a simpler time when a legendary didn’t have to be nigh omnipotent to be considered great. All it had to do was escape an evil research lab, slaughter its creators and sulk in a cave until stumbled upon by a trainer. Happy birthday to the OG ‘mon, Mewtwo.

Feb. 6 is the unofficial birthday of Pokémon’s first legendary, Mewtwo. In the original Red and Blue games, if you traveled to Cinnabar Island and visited the Pokémon Mansion, you could read a series of journal entries chronicling the rise, and eventual fall, of Mewtwo and it’s creators.

Mew gave birth.
We named the newborn Mewtwo.

Looking back at this now, I’m a bit concerned about how a Mew could birth an entire Mewtwo. Mew is like a foot tall, while Mewtwo is the size of a full-grown wrestler. The physics of it just don’t mash up. Mew is the only Pokémon other than Ditto that can learn Transform, so maybe… Ew, let's not go there.

‘Pokémon Go’ Needs Mewtwo

Today would have been an amazing day for Pokémon Go to have some kind of Mewtwo event. The date is already built into the lore of the game, it would be incredibly easy just to acknowledge it in some way. Imagine if Niantic had released a message saying a new Psychic type Pokémon was seen flying through the sky. Imagine how happy fans would be if they opened their game and found a legendary badass waiting to be caught.

Niantic dropped the ball on this one. Pokémon has such a strong history that I feel is getting wasted. The regular Pokémon franchise still finds ways to tease past games, like Hoopa’s wormholes or whatever Necrozma is. Make Mewtwo super difficult to capture or only available in an event, just give us something in Pokémon Go .

I’d take Missingno. at this point. Pokémon Go needs awesome content or it’s going to go be nothing more than a footnote of a fad that could have been so much more. Soon, you’ll be able to put the game’s story next to pogs and HD DVDs.
