Big news: free-to-play MMO Wildstar will finally be available via Steam in the first half of 2016, bringing with it a massive content update in the form of a new location called Destination Arcterra.

Arcterra is aimed at endgame, max-level characters and unlocks after players run through the Eldan content. The vast arctic tundra with glowing skies and glittering ice seems hostile to life at first, but the ruins dotted throughout the snows of Arcterra suggest civilization has existed for a long time. Explorers will have a lot to occupy themselves in the frozen, sprawling ruins, especially when they encounter the dangerous creatures roaming the wasteland.

Destination Arcterra will feature “snowballing” boss encounters, which increase in difficulty as players fill a boss-killing meter. Players move up from killing two-person bosses across Arcterra to five-person and even 20-person bosses.

Another feature is a dynamic blizzard event which puts factions at each other’s throats. Basically, 20-person bosses will appear throughout the region of Arcterra and drop keys when killed. Whatever faction gets enough keys will be able to unlock a special dungeon beneath the quest hub and have exclusive access to it for 24 hours.

Arcterra will also possess its own unique loot table, including a new costume and mount, and a reward tracker that progresses as the player continues to work through content in Arcterra.

Narrative-wise, the story of Arcterra comes to a climax in the Vault of the Archon, the second chapter of the Nexus Saga. This new instance will have unique mechanics and bosses, fully-voiced NPCs, cinematics, and new environments. While Journey Into Omnicore-1 was single-player only, the Vault of the Archon instance will support multiplayer so that players can work through it in groups of up to five.

Looking forward, a new 20-person raid called Redmoon Terror will soon be made available. The Redmoon Terror raid will feature new spell mechanics as well as the ability to adjust each boss’s difficulty before beginning the raid. Redmoon Terror involves the return of Mordechai Redmoon, brought back from the dead with a slew of zombie pirates. The raid will be available on PTR before it goes live later this year so that players can test and provide feedback on the new content.

Finally, yet another new system will allow players to upgrade their items, weapons, armor, and runes up to five power levels using upgrade components. Players may obtain components by salvaging equipments, with lower level components available for combination into higher ones.
