The writers of Deadpool aren’t ruling out a Wolverine cameo in Deadpool 2. Or at least, their hearts aren’t. In an interview with CinemaBlend, writer/producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick stated:
“What I would say is we've broken all the rules, so there are no rules that we're unafraid to break, and so, you never know.”
At the same time, the writers expressed deep respect for Hugh Jackman’s 17 years as Wolverine and his decision to retire.
"We would love to be able to have Wolverine go head to head with Deadpool, but we also have to keep in mind that there is this larger X-strategy in place and then there's also, I think, probably a little fatigue on Hugh’s part. He’s done so many versions of Wolverine and he’s doing one more, and I just have to believe at some point he wants to hang up the claws and I just think we have to respect that. It’s the bottom line, It’s unfortunate that the timing worked out to be the way it is, but at the same time, you can never begrudge an actor or anyone in any profession, the decision to be like alright, it’s time to hand it off to someone else.”
In a May 2015 interview on The Dr. Oz Show , Jackman said regarding his retirement:
“This will be my last one. […] It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.
“I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”
While Jackman’s fatigue with the role seems a tough hurdle to overcome, might he be coaxed out of his stance by the sheer fun of facing off against Reynolds’ Deadpool? Given the longstanding relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine in the comics, it seems a damned shame to have Wolverine retiring just as Deadpool’s star finally ascends from the murk of production hell.
Of course, there’s nothing stopping Fox from recasting Wolverine, but I have to admit, it’d be pretty special to see Jackson and Reynolds share the screen as characters they’re so deeply tied to.
Reese agreed, joking, “We might be showing up at Hugh’s ranch in Australia with a rag with chloroform on it. You just never know.”
What do you think? Would Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 2: Deader and Poolier be the best thing ever, or are you cool with a recasted Wolverine making an appearance? Don’t care, think it’s all about the merc with a mouth? Feel free to discuss the Deadpool sequel in the comments section below.
