The Wonderful 101: Remaster was put on Kickstarter by developer PlatinumGames. The goal was to allow this game to be released for the Switch. The good news is that within minutes of putting up the campaign, it managed to reach its goal. In fact as of this writing, while PlatinumGames only needed below $50,000, the pledges have reached $1.2 million.
Back in early January of this year, PlatinumGames announced that it received capital investment from Tencent Holdings. In a statement, PlatinumGames President and CEO Kenich Sato said that the investment doesn't have any "effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure."
PlatinumGames had been known to develop Wii U games for the Nintendo Switch, like Bayonetta 2. For The Wonderful 101, Executive Producer Atsushi Inaba told The Verge that it didn’t reach the audience they expected with its original launch. PlatinumGames did however get permission from Nintendo to release The Wonderful 101 not only on the Switch, but possibly to other platforms as well.
While PlatinumGames did receive added investment from Tencent, the plan for The Wonderful 101 was in place before the agreement. Thus, any money gained from the investment isn't going to be used to develop the game. This explains PlatinumGames' move to crowdfunding.
With the campaign reaching the amount it needs, it means that four stretch goals have been achieved. In addition to a Switch version, The Wonderful 101: Remastered is also going to be released to the PC through Steam as well as the PlayStation 4. There's also going to be a new Time Attack mode.
For now, two goals are left. These are:
- Goal: $1.5 million
- Luka's First Mission.
- This is a new 2D side scrolling adventure.
- Goal: $1.75 million
- A Remix Soundtrack that features a special guest.
Making the campaign even more exciting is the unique reward offered that, while optional, is sure to excite fans. Serving as director for The Wonderful 101 is none other Hideki Kamiya. While being described by many as a soft-spoken individual, he has a rather humorous reputation when it comes to social media, particularly on Twitter. Kamiya has long been known to block users for poorly thought-out messages like asking questions in English.
So what's the reward all about? Well, starting at a certain tier and upwards, none other than Kamiya is going to tweet to individuals on this tier. After that, he's going to block them forever.
Excited for this one? What do you think?
