Nintendo’s recent Nintendo Direct Mini disappointed some folks by being short and skimpy on details. But alongside news about Dark Souls, free Super Mario Odyssey DLC and a new Mario Tennis game on the Switch, the Nintendo Direct Mini confirmed that a remake of legendary Nintendo DS J-RPG The World Ends With You is en route, and that’s literally all I care about.
The World Ends With You came out over ten years ago in 2007. It still holds up: the character designs by belt-and-zippers maestro Tetsuya Nomura, the incredible soundtrack, the young and lively cast of characters, the exciting battle system that takes full advantage of the DS touch screen in a way not many other games have, the pins, the style, the setting, the mythology, the post-game content, the plot, the character arcs, the dialogue, the shops, the NPCs, my boy Joshua… my heart will go on and on.
“When the main character Neku suddenly encounters the mysterious girl Shiki, he gets caught up in a deadly game. He’ll be erased from existence if he can’t compete a series of twisted tasks,” the Nintendo Direct Mini explained.
Fans have been begging for a sequel since approximately forever, and the remake may mean that Square Enix is acknowledging the fans’ intense, prolonged interest in this cult-classic title.
Even better, being on the Switch means that TWEWY’s unique touch-based controls remain intact. Players can also use the Joy-Con controllers to try combat in an all-new way, though the Direct Mini didn’t share details on how that mechanic would work.
In addition, the game’s visuals have been upgraded to be even more crisp and clean, with a new widescreen presentation. Most important of all, The World Ends With You -Final Remix- adds a brand new scenario “that gets to the heart of the story.” New content for a 10-year-old game? Thank you, based Reggie.
“Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling home console in history, and Nintendo is not taking our foot off the gas in 2018,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of sales and marketing, in a statement. “For the millions of people who just received Nintendo systems as gifts, or consumers getting ready to join the growing community of Nintendo Switch owners, Nintendo and our third-party partners have fun new games and content in store at retail or for digital purchase.”
The game launches later this year, though Nintendo did not detail a more specific release window. A page for the remake is up on Amazon here; though pre-orders aren’t active, you can request to receive an email when they do go live.
