The X-Files revival series will wrap up on Monday, but recent comments from Fox execs give a glimmer of hope that there could be another season.
“We said before it aired that we would love to do more,” said Fox entertainment president David Madden to Variety . Although Variety’s insider sources report there have been no official renewal talks, a second revival season would likely depend on the schedules of David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter.
Fox TV chiefs Dana Walden and Gary Newman touched the cast scheduling issue at Television Critics Association press tour last month. “The biggest impediment to going forward with The X-Files is the schedule of David and Gillian and, to an extent, Chris…but even the other night at the premiere, we were all laughing and joking that we would love to do this again. So we would be on board if schedules can be worked out,” the Fox bosses told Variety .
The X-Files 6-episode limited series reboot has been a huge success. 50 million viewers across the globe watched the 2-episode premiere. The series has an average of 9.9 million total same-day viewers through five episodes.
“We haven’t talked to the talent yet about Season 2 in any more definitive way than we had prior to airing the show, but certainly, it seems like there’s an audience responding to the show that would love to see more episodes,” Fox entertainment president David Madden explained to Variety earlier in the season.
Before the new season aired, Duchovny told Variety he would have never agreed to a full 22-episode season, but said six ordered episodes were doable. “I would never have gone and done another 22 episodes of X-Files, but we’re going to do six — well, that’s like doing a movie. That’s like continuing the show in a way that we all can do at this point in our lives so that’s how it all came about … Six to me sounds very doable at any walk of my life. It’s not a great hardship in terms of time. I would hope it will be successful, I would hope we could continue, but right now, I’m just looking at it as these six, and then we’ll see what happens.”
If Fox can secure the talent and find time to shoot, The X-Files may not be over just yet. Catch the season finale on Fox Monday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. EST.
