It took a year longer than many XCOM fans wanted, but the beloved Long War mod is finally making the jump to XCOM 2. And that’s not even the biggest news to emerge from the company formerly known as Long War Studios on Thursday morning.
It sounds like things have changed since the last time we spoke with Long War mod design lead and studio founder John Lumpkin. Last year, Lumpkin and the rest of his team were hard at work on three new XCOM 2 mods and the studio head told us he wasn’t sure if they’d ever begin work on a follow-up to the popular Long War mod. But one of 2K’s first big announcements of 2017 is confirmation that we’ll see a Long War 2 mod on PC in the near future. There’s no release date yet and we don’t have any details on what will change for those who have LW2 installed. But we do know that the Long War add-ons are now “exclusively linked” to the XCOM series; an announcement we can only hope means we’ll keep seeing new Long War mods as long as 2K and Firaxis keep their rebooted XCOM series around.
In addition to announcing the Long War 2 mod, the company also announced it will continue business operations under a new name, Pavonis Interactive. Lumpkin says the name change reflects the company’s desire to work on more than just XCOM mods. The studio has already announced its debut project, Terra Invicta, and apparently has plans for other “independent original titles.”
XCOM 2 is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The Long War 2 mod will only be available to the PC community.
