Nintendo announced a slew of titles during the Nintendo Switch presentation, and some were bigger surprises than others. One of the biggest: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from Monolith Soft, a sprawling JRPG that will give the upcoming system some much-needed genre diversity. And the design looks pretty amazing. UPDATE: The game is currently planning on a 2017 release date, according to Nintendo.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Confirmed For Nintendo Switch
Xenoblade Chronicles has been a quiet sort of hit for Nintendo, with the original Wii game—which came out very late in the Wii’s lifecycle—becoming a closet hit. Xenoblade Chronicles X became one of the biggest JRPGs, if not the biggest, in the Wii U console’s lifecycle, and although the game got mixed reviews it was praised for its innovative story and setting.
Open world JRPGs aren’t very common yet—despite the recent release of a truly massive one, Final Fantasy XV—and Xenoblade Chronicles is inluenced to some degree by classic American open-world games like Skyrim. It’s a Japanese take on the American take on a Japanese genre.
But really, all we know so far is that it has a crazy, crazy-looking sky city and flying whale creature, and it looks stunningly beautiful despite the limitations of the graphics. It looks pretty exciting. There’s no word on the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 release date just yet, but let’s hope it will be soon. UPDATE: As mentioned above, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is now scheduled for a 2017 release date.
