Disney’ s latest animated animal venture Zootopia has succeeded in what seemed impossible: crushing the Frozen juggernaut beneath its heel to claim the film’s spot in Disney’s records.
In Zootopia’s first opening weekend , it earned over $75 million domestically compared to Frozen’s $67.4 million. That makes Zootopia the biggest three-day Disney opening of all time . Of course, that’s not counting Disney’s other animation arm, Pixar, which hauled in $90.4 million with Inside Out.
Zootopia’s winning streak is likely to continue as it faces off against the contenders in its second weekend, including 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Brothers Grimsby . 10 Cloverfield Lane is a sci-fi thriller and The Brothers Grimsby is another sophomoric Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle. Not a lot of competition for what is apparently a really good film -- Zootopia currently stands at an incredible 99% on RottenTomatoes. (There’s always gotta be that one . Or, uh, two . Out of 147 .)
Zootopia ’s current international total stands at $207.1 million, with the bulk of that coming from China at $52.8 million, France at $22.4 million and Russia at $16.7 million. That means Zootopia has sailed past the $300 million mark .
And it shows little signs of slowing down. One analyst at Variety points out that Zootopia has the same digital engagement pattern as Frozen exhibited, climbing slowly day after day. Whether or not Zootopia will continue to keep pace is something only time will tell, but the film is projected to finish its second weekend with a $140 million 10-day domestic take.
Not bad for a bunch of furries.
Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore with Jared Bush, Zootopia stars the vocal talents of Idris Elba, Shakira, Jason Bateman, Octavia Spencer and Ginnifer Goodwin, among others.
