Disney's latest feature film Zootopia is almost at $1 billion worldwide gross. That’s an incredible feat for any movie, but especially for Zootopia, an original animated film released during “not blockbuster season” and “not holiday season.”
Here’s all the things Zootopia is not:
A princess movie
A superhero movie
A sequel
A remake
A reboot
Based on a smartphone app
Based on a video game
Based on any other existing IP
Here’s what Zootopia is:
A clever and poignant discussion of race using animals as a metaphor
A pointed rejection of the politics of fear
Hilarious, sweet and touching
An entirely, 100%, completely original property
Based on its March release date, its originality and its daring subject matter, Zootopia might have been considered a flash in the pan, destined to fade quickly. Instead, here’s some of the records it’s making and breaking:
The fourth-biggest animated film behind Toy Story 3, Minions and Frozen
The sixth-biggest non sequel/prequel of all time
Disney’s eleventh-best film (globally)
The second biggest original movie of ALL TIME, behind only James Cameron’s Avatar
13 consecutive weeks in the top 10 at the U.S. box office
Zootopia opened at $75 million, bumping Frozen out of its spot as Disney’s biggest three-day opening of all time. Its box office tail has only continued to grow as positive word-of-mouth and glowing critical reception spread, with more people interested over time, not less.
Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore with Jared Bush, Zootopia stars the vocal talents of Idris Elba, Shakira, Jason Bateman, Octavia Spencer and Ginnifer Goodwin, among others. Zootopia comes to Amazon Prime Video, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD and Digital HD on June 7.
