Arms is one of the most anticipated Nintendo Switch titles of the year and it’s not only because of the fast-paced punching you’ll be doing, but the colorful characters and world that Arms takes place in.
Currently, there are 10 Arms characters confirmed each with their own unique look, fighting style and origins.
Similar to games like Overwatch, the team behind Arms is building up the world and characters to establish a connection between player and fighter and to give the game a much deeper sense of community.
And while there are 10 Arms fighters (with more likely to be revealed closer to the release date) there’s still a lot fans are learning about each character.
Here’s five things you may not have known about the Arms fighters.
1. Not everyone in the Arms world has… Arms
This may sound weird, but not every person in the Arms universe has weapons instead of arms. It makes sense, considering people pack stadiums to see these special fighters duke it out, which wouldn’t be the case if everyone had weapons attached to their bodies. They could just fight on the street.
Two fighters have origins that prove not everyone are born with these weapons. Mechanica’s bio says she had to build her way to the tournament.
“This fifteen-year-old girl genius loves the Arms fighters—especially Ribbon Girl. She works in the town's factory and wasn't born with extendable arms, unlike most of the fighters. She built her own powered suit so she could participate in the Grand Prix.”
The other fighter is Spring Man and he has an even more mysterious backstory surrounding how he got his Arms.
2. Spring Man Woke Up Like This
The Arms posterboy, Spring Man, wasn’t born with Arms but instead, according to the recent Arms Nintendo Direct, Spring Man woke up one day with Arms.
However, instead of being grief stricken about losing his normal arms, he was amazed. This happy-go-lucky attitude has become one of Spring Man’s key traits and a major part of why he is adored by fans around the Arms world.
Just take a look at this official artwork of Spring Man saving a young fan.
From Spring Man’s personality and the story behind his powerful Arms, it seems we won’t learn about what happened to him just yet, because he doesn’t seem to care and is enjoying being a fighter. But as we’ll see later, there’s a larger conspiracy going around that he may be a part of.
3. Fighters’ arms can act like normal arms and have hands under weapons
Again, this may sound weird, and fairly obvious, but Arms fighters are not handicapped by their weapons. A piece of official Nintendo artwork reveals Arms fighters can have their arms act like normal appendages. We also see that when weapons aren’t attached to the end of their arms, there are hands and fingers there.
Check out the tweet from the official Japanese Arms Twitter account below.
We see Ribbon Girl signing an autograph and considering this is the first time we see Arms fighters in gameplay or official art without their weapons or arms extended, this confirms they can live a normal life outside of the ring.
And if don’t think this is a big deal, just read the comments below the above tweet.
4. Master Mummy has a Family
Master Mummy was one of the first fighters confirmed in Arms . And while his look makes him seem like a “bad guy,” he actually has a family and a potential purpose for joining the Grand Prix.
According to Master Mummy’s bio, he woke up in a Mummy hospital one day and that he does have a family but their whereabouts are unknown. Perhaps his family is being held captive and he has to win the Grand Prix to get them back?
That’s probably not the case but it makes for some interesting theories about what his deal actually is. And if you want to see one part of his family, check out the Arms tweet below.
5. Is There a Larger Conspiracy Involving Helix and the Arms Research Facility?
The Arms Research Facility is where Helix was unintentionally created. But how could someone like Helix be created so easily, unless the Research Facility is behind the peculiar backstories of both Spring Man and Master Mummy? Maybe they were also experiments of the Arms Research Facility that succeeded where Helix failed.
There’s more to Arms than what has been shown already, and it’ll be fun to unravel the mysteries of this world.
Arms will release for the Nintendo Switch on June 16.
