Premiering this week on Netflix, Amanda Knox focuses on the sensational trial of an American exchange student twice convicted and twice acquitted of the gruesome 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Knox, charged with the crime along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, has often been characterized as a femme fatale with an appetite for blood in media coverage of the case, sometimes referred to as “Foxy Knoxy.” She was even the subject of a Lifetime movie starring Hayden Panettiere.
During her initial trial, Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison; Sollecito received a 25-year sentence. The ruling was thrown out after errors were uncovered in the initial investigation, but the pair were convicted again after a second trial in 2013. They again managed to get the verdict overturned on appeal in 2015.

The Netflix documentary aims to explore behind the headlines, accusations and slut-shaming that have impacted mainstream and legal assessments of the case. Filmmakers Brian McGinn and Rod Blackhurst focus on the use of social media profiles as a form of “evidence,” both in the legal system and the court of public opinion. If you followed the Knox case at all, or are a true crime buff in general, you’ll want to check out Amanda Knox on Netflix.
Amanda Knox debuts on Netflix at 12:01 a.m. PDT (or 3:01 a.m. EDT) on Sept. 30.
