The premiere of American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson carried viewers from the discovery of the bodies of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman to O.J. “Juice” Simpson’s escape by Ford Bronco four days later. We’re nowhere near the trial but evidence is beginning to pile up against him. It’s hard to imagine how O.J. Simpson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is going to get out of this one.

On the defense side, we’ve got the Simpson dream team beginning to assemble, with Robert Kardashian (David Schwimmer) joining Robert Shapiro (John Travolta) as he runs O.J. through an assembly line of lie detectors and doctors.

On the prosecution’s side we’ve got the overworked Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) and a whole bunch of star-struck, incompetent cops.

Will O.J. Simpson be successfully prosecuted for the murder of his ex-wife? So far the forensic evidence is damning, though there are already cracks in the prosecution’s facade that might be exploited by the defense team in future episodes.

Here’s how the evidence looks so far on American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

The Evidence So Far:

  • A blood trail leading from the white van to O.J. Simpson’s house.
  • The cut on O.J.’s finger.
  • The blood inside the van.
  • There’s a witness to O.J. Simpson’s presence at the crime scene.
  • Blood on the gloves match with O.J. and Nicole.

Stuff That Doesn’t Amount To Concrete Evidence But Sure Looks Bad:

  • Leaving town in such a way as to give yourself a limp alibi.
  • Not asking how your wife died when the police tell you she died.
  • Maybe pressuring some dude to lie about cheeseburgers.
  • Failing a lie detector test. Very badly.
  • Fleeing in a Bronco when you’re supposed to be turning yourself into police.

Evidence of Innocence:

  • O.J. seems really, really sad sometimes.
  • Simpson said he didn’t do it, even when Robert Shapiro promised not to tell anyone else.

Of course, it makes sense that the case against Simpson in the premiere of American Crime Story looks insurmountable. Simpson’s defense team has been mostly reactive, with no real strategy planned. This will probably change in future episodes of The People v. O.J. Simpson.

American Crime Story returns Feb. 9 with Episode 2 “The Run of His Life.”
