WWDC 2016: What To Expect At Apple’s Annual Developer’s Conference Live Stream
iOS 10
Siri SDK
In terms of iOS 10, one of the biggest changes we’ve heard coming so far is a powerful update to Siri. According to the rumor mill, Apple is expected to introduce a new Siri SDK, which would allow third-party app developers to integrate the digital assistant into their apps and make related services available through Siri. The release of a Siri SDK could allow for things like ordering an Uber via Siri, checking the status of an Amazon order and countless other third party app integrations that would make life even that much simpler for Apple users. For those of us who already rely heavily on Siri for many day-to-day functions, beefing up Siri’s capabilities will serve to further cement user loyalty.
Apple Music App
The Apple Music app has never been particularly intuitive I its design, but iOS 10 is rumored to change that. According to a May report by Bloomberg, Apple is set to make “sweeping changes” to the music streaming service one of the primary of which involves a redesign of the user interface. According to 9to5 Mac, Apple Music’s redesign will feature “bolder, yet simpler” elements, including black and white backgrounds and text that lends it self to greater focus on album art. There will be some new functions such as a “Browse” section to replace “New,” which is meant to enhance the music discovery process. There will also be added 3D touch shortcut previews and song sharing options. Apple also plans to make changes to the “For You” section, which will simply it and make it more usable.
Photos
If there’s anything smartphone lovers enjoy, it’s taking photos on their device and iOS 10 is rumored to be a much needed Skitch-like photo editing featuring to iOS 10. The new feature would allow users to edit photos by drawing on them, creating mark ups similar to the options available when you are sending a photo or PDF through Mail. There could be some additional photo editing features added such as adjusting brightness to specific parts of photos, but those rumors are unconfirmed.
Disappearing Stock Apps
There are rumors that Apple could be considering adding a feature in iOS 10 that would hide or delete stock apps for users’ devices – something many users have searched for ways to do via jailbreaking their devices or using other handy tricks.
OS X 10.12
Siri
2016 looks to be the year that Apple users will finally get their favorite virtual assistant on Mac. Rumors that Apple would be bringing Siri to Mac this year have been going strong for a number of months now. Apple has been reluctant to bring Siri to Mac in the past due to the heavy battery drain that comes from the feature being “always on,” conflicting with a computer’s sleep function. New functionality in Intel’s latest chips, however, may finally allow Apple to give us the virtual assistant on OS X after all.
OS X to macOS
It has been pretty heavily rumored that Apple’s next desktop operating system may not bear the OS X signature name but rather be converted to macOS so that it more closely matches its other software naming conventions (i.e. iOS, watchOS, tvOS)
Auto Unlock via iPhone
There’s been a lot of talk surrounding possible Mac unlock functionality via the iPhone. Since MacBooks have yet to receive the Touch ID unlock capability iPhones and the latest iPads boast, this may be a desirable solution for all Apple users. There are further rumors that the iPhone unlock capabilities could allow for Apple pay authorization on Macs as well.
Apple Pay
As foreshadowed above, Apple is rumored to bring in Apple Pay capabilities to web browsers, which would allow users to make Apple Pay purchases quickly and easily when using the safari browser. Apple is also rumored to be brining person-to-person money sending capabilities to the service as well, which if revealed would be available on mobile and web devices.
tvOS and watchOS
While we’re likely to hear something about updates coming to these two Apple devices’ software, thus far nothing has really been brewing in the rumor mill. The expectation, of course, is that Apple watchOS will likely further extend the health functionalities the previous Apple event expounded upon, while Apple tvOSwill likely continue to work to bring features that keep it competitive with contenders like Roku and Amazon Fire TV
Other Rumored Apple Software Changes
Security
As always Apple pries itself on the level of privacy and security its platform provides for users. Following the recent scuffle with the FBI, Apple is expected to introduce some changes to services like iCloud, possibly introducing features such as encrypted iCloud backups or other protections that would make it impossible for the company to “hack” user data, even if compelled by the government.
iMessage For Android
There are murmurs that Apple could introduce iMessage for Android users. While these rumors seem improbable since iMessage has always been an exclusive feature for iOS users to share, it will be interesting to see how that might be implemented. With more an more user demand for secure means of communication, Apple’s end to end encrypted chat could be attractive to many.
App Store
The app store is set to see a number of changes which include things like ads in the search results – similar to the ads seen when you search terms in Google. In addition, developers with user subscription loyalty will soon see a larger chunk of the profits. Afer a year of subscribing to an app, developers will receive 85% of the profit from the subscriber instead of 70%. The app store’s “Featured” menu will also hide apps that you already have installed on your device to enhance your app discovery process. Additionally, the categories tab is set to return and new 3D Touch share options are to be added.
